Garage Sales

Now that we’ve sold the house, we have to quickly sell everything in it to be able to travel full time. Enter the garage sale. Three to be precise.

We knew it would be a sizable task to get rid of all the stuff we had accumulated over 30+ years. I talked about the need for this purging in the post “Stuff, Maintenance and Alaska“. Once we got the offer on the house we had to put that plan into motion. We scoped out three consecutive garage sales. The first was just a general sale for all the housewares, holiday decorations, clothes, & exercise equipment. The second sale was a very large tool sale for all the stuff I had accumulated from 30+ years of building and fixing things. The final sale will be for furniture and home decor items plus anything else that hasn’t sold yet. The first two sales have gone extremely well and we got rid of a lot of stuff. It was crazy busy most of the time and we hardly had a chance to sit down. Hopefully the last sale will be just as successful since whatever we don’t sell we have to get rid of some other way. With the garage sales other people carry the stuff off for you.

Another benefit from the sales has been all the interaction with people. We were invariably asked where we were moving to. When we told them we were going to travel full time we got into many discussions about how they wanted to do that too or how they had done a long trip and wished they could do it again. Some were indifferent to the idea but that’s ok. This lifestyle change is not for everyone. The vast majority of people however were very intrigued with the idea and many echoed what we have on our home page. Do it now while you still can. You never know what life will bring next year or the year after that. There are too many examples of people wanting to do something like this someday but someday never came because of health issues or some other life event. It was very reinforcing to hear that this plan of ours is not so crazy after all.

So one more sale and then we focus on moving what’s left out of the house. We have two weeks before we give possession to the buyers. We still have a lot of stuff in the house. We still have a lot to do but we’re working towards a larger goal so that makes the hard work more palatable. So more work for now and little time for photography. Soon enough though we’ll be able to look back on another major milestone met.
